GPON Gigabyte Passive Optical Network

Gigabyte Passive Optical Networks (GPON’s) are networks which rely on optical cables to deliver information. GPON’s are currently the leading form of Passive Optical Networks. GPONS offer up to a 1:64 ratio on a single fiber. As opposed to a standard copper wire in most networks, GPON’s are 95% more energy efficient. In addition to efficiency, gigabyte passive optical networks provide a low cost solutions to adding users through splitters which make GPON’s desirable in populated areas.

GPON working

A GPON network is capable of transmitting ethernet, TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) as well as ATM traffic. A GPON network consists of OLT (Optical Line Terminals), ONU (Optical Network Unit), and a splitter. The splitter will divide the signal when needed. The OLT takes in all of the optical signals in the form of beams of light from ONUs and will convert it to an electrical signal. OLTs normally support up to 72 ports. An ONU connects to end users and will send their signals back to the OLT. A GPON network can reach up to 20 km and provide service up to 64 end users. GPON utilizes both upstream and downstream data by means of Optical Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM).

NTW-G19008C2 series is a high integration and high bandwidth smart cassette 8 ports GPON OLT designed for operators access and enterprise campus network. NTW-G19008C2 provides 8 downlink 1000M GPON ports, 4GE Ethernet ports and 2 * 10G uplink ports. The height is only 1U for easy installation and space saving. It adopts the advanced technology, offering efficient GPON solution. It can support different ONU hybrid networking which help save a lot of cost for operators.
